"Never mind the three lawyers," replied the experienced defendant. "Just get me one good witness."

Ten guidelines for phoning across time zones:
- Know the time in the city you are calling
- When placing calls halfway around the world, note the date differential - be sure you and the other party are both aware of the time and date difference between you
- Place the call so that it arrives within an 8:30-5:00 span at the destination - unless the call is an emergency, business etiquette dictates that you contact buyers and customers during their workday, not yours
- Specify times in the other party's time zone when you arrange for a return call or meeting - this shows your sensitivity and good manners
- When leaving a message on voice mail, indicate the zone from which you're calling as well as the time you left the message - say something like "...it is now 3 p.m. your time, 2 p.m. my time"
- Make telephone appointments whenever you can - international telephone tag is costly. When the other party will be calling you back, give at least two alternative times when you will be sure to be in your office
- Alert your telephone support staff or receptionist when to track you down
- When arranging a conference call across time zones, recognize time differentials
- When leaving a message on a long distance call, include the area code with your number
- Keep your long-distance callers aware of changes in your area code - take advantage of the opportunity to contact them to introduce a new service or product
